05/03/08 - Friction Out Now

My name is Joe Stretch. My debut novel, 'Friction', published by Vintage Books, is out now.

I've recorded a couple of early chapters from 'Friction' for you to listen to here and there are some videos too here. If you like what you see - and hear - get yourself a copy of the book now.

I live in Manchester. I am currently editing my second novel, 'Love Song', and working on my third, 'New World/A Season in Wow Bang'. I sing in the Manchester band, Performance.

'Raw, wild, aflame with ideas, Friction will bring a cure-or-kill medicinal shock to our post-boom hangover.'
Boyd Tonkin, The Independent.

'Anthony Burgess is alive and well and still living in Manchester. This is A Clockwork Orange for the 21st Century.'
Nicholas Royle

'Like Houellebecq for generation WHY'

01/02/08 - (We are) Performance (This is) This Year.

I let January go. It's a fucker. But February is a friendly idiot. Welcome to it.

We've been busy over Christmas and January writing album two. I think it's going to be called 'Unconsoled' but there are days when I get desperate to call it 'The heart's a hollow muscle baby' and there are even days when I want to call it 'Parodies of Paradise' or 'Paradise Threat.' But no, it will proabably be called 'Unconsoled.' I'm really pleased with it. There's another couple of recording sessions to do around the end of Feb, beginning of March and then that will be that. We'll be ready.

The two new songs we're putting up. What are they all about? Well, 'All My Wires' is one of the demos that we made for the album. We're yet to record it properly but it's a taster of what to expect. Although having said that 'All My Wires' isn't much like the rest of the record. Still, hope you like it. The other track is an electro remix of a song called 'The Unconsoled' which is looking set to be the first single off the record. We'll get you the actual song very soon but for now enjoy Joe Cross's reworking. Joe's done a remix of an old song, Surrender, too. I've heard it. It's great. We'll get that uploaded in the near future, too.

As well as the new album, there's plenty to look forward to this year. My novel, Friction, is out in early March. The band is also appearing in a film this year. I'm not sure of the details yet but we've shot it and it's due to premiere in Cannes. The glamour. The film is called 'Unmade Beds.' We're hoping that the director of it will direct our next music video. We'll see.

We'll be playing live again very soon. Just as soon as we're sure the album is in the bag. I'll keep you posted. On the subject of book reccomendations, I'm currrently reading the new Phillip Roth book 'Exit Ghost'. It's great but maybe not the best place to start with Roth. I re-read Kafka's 'The Trial' over Christmas and you can't go wrong with Kafka.

Today the sky above Manchester is blue. I will be quick to inform you of any developments on this front...
